In the past decade, there have been growing concerns about the information environment being plagued with misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories. These fears are not unfounded.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we witnessed a resurgence of anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, leading to many refusing to receive the vaccine. Tensions rise and societies are divided with extreme political and anti-science mindsets, leading to a lack of trust in government, broken relationships, violence, and death.
The Minds of Conspiracy dives into the mindset of conspiracy believers and its impact on our society, with the flat earth community as the case study for understanding how a seemingly absurd conspiracy theory managed to target the fears and insecurities of individuals even though the shape of the Earth has been established and proven since 5th century BC.
Interventions are slow and the future may seem bleak. However, with a holistic view of the crisis of conspiracy theories and the people involved, we can work together towards a future where we and future generations will feel confident navigating through the digital information space.
